Leroy Rosenior - Goalkeeper / Defender / Forward
D.O.B. - - Clapham
Debut : Sudbury Town (H) - 16/03/96 Last Game : Salisbury City (H) - 02/12/97
Probably one of the biggest names to ever be associated with Gloucester City when he was appointed Manager in March 1996 following the sacking of John Murphy.
Described as "a friend" by Keith Gardner, his arrival signalled something of a revolt by a few of Murphy's players but he was well backed by the Chairman and brought in new faces and built a team that would ultimately achieve more than his predecessor.
His attacking style saw his team finish league top scorers in his first full season mainly thanks to the goals of Dale Watkins, Dave Webb and Adie Mings. However the highlight was the run to the semi-final of the FA Trophy where his team narrowly missed out in three games against Dagenham & Redbridge. The run might've ended before it started though had it not been for his heroics as goalkeeper in the third qualifying round at home to Kingstonian.
City suffered last day heartbreak with the team in second place winning promotion owing to the state of Champions' Gresley Rovers Moat Ground. A 1-3 defeat at home to Salisbury handed the step up to local rivals Cheltenham who had drawn away at Burton Albion.
He scored twice for City; both times against Cinderford Town in the league cup in different seasons. His lack of goals was probably down to him often playing as a central defender, no doubt putting good use to what he learned as a striker in the Football League.
It's unusual to see athletes smoking but Leroy gratefully accepted a fag and lit up whilst sat at the top table during one of Gardner's City Open Forum's at Meadow Park. I think there was an audible gasp too!
Leroy quit after the FA Cup defeat at Kidderminster Harriers in October 1998 to take up a youth coaching role at Bristol City.
