Ian Hedges - Defender
D.O.B. - - Bristol
Debut : Forest Green Rovers (H) - 12/01/88 Last Game : Witney Town (H) - 30/10/90
Ian was a young defender originally drafted in to City's threadbare squad for a Westgate Insurance cup game against Forest Green Rovers during the 1987/88 season along with teammate Nigel Patterson. It was his one and only game during that campaign before signing permanently during the following summer.
Ian was used mainly as a right back during the first half of his City career but it was when he moved to centre-back that bigger clubs began to take notice.
Ian was signed by Harry Redknapp at AFC Bournemouth for £25,000 at the end of October 1990 after making eighty starts for the Tigers. Redknapp snapped him up ahead of interest from Leicester City, Southampton, Swindon Town and Oxford United.
His move to the south coast even got a mention in the back pages of the Sun with the somewhat small, but still headline "Plumber Ian has it tapped"!
He failed to make the grade at Dean Court and following a successful loan spell with Bath City he made his move permanent in a £10,000 transfer and spent seven years at Twerton Park where he was twice named player of the season and scored twelve goals in 286 appearances.
At the end of the 1997-98 campaign he left the Romans to link up with Forest Green Rovers where he stayed for four years.
