Gary Kemp - Defender
D.O.B. - - Thornbury
Debut : Merthyr Tydfil (A) - 19/02/91 Last Game : Havant & Waterlooville (A) - 11/09/99
Brave central defender signed from Almondsbury Picksons in December 1990 although he continued to play for them up until his City debut in an FA Trophy tie away at Merthyr Tydfil in February 1991. This included a friendly against Almondsbury after he'd signed for us!
He went on to make 374 appearances for the club over the next ten seasons only leaving following off the field problems at the club.
In his time he scored 26 goals; two that I can recall are one at home to Halesowen in a game sandwiched between the four Trophy games against Runcorn and the most powerful of headers away at Yeading in the first game of our Trophy run to the semi-finals in 1997.
Outside of football he worked in a bank and was obviously clever, although not clever enough that he lost his first ever wage packet from City playing cards on the coach on the way home from a game. From that moment on he never opened his wages until he got home!
Soured his status as a City legend when as a substitute for Mangotsfield United thought that walking from the changing rooms to the opposition dugout was more important than observing the minutes' silence held in memory of City fan Pete Chase. Kemp clearly didn't care than the noise of his studs on concrete disrespected the moment.
He is still playing in his mid-fifties and regularly turns out for the City Legends team that plays charity matches at Meadow Park.
