Derek Dawkins - Defender / Midfielder
D.O.B. - - Edmonton, London
Debut : Yate Town (H) - 26/11/90 Last Game : Bromsgrove Rovers (A) - 04/05/91
Described by Brian Hughes as the best full back he'd ever played with Derek "The Dude" Dawkins signed for the club from Yeovil Town for £3000 in November 1990 but played mostly in central midfield.
He made 22 appearances to the end of the 1990/91 season and eventually moved to right back for the FA Trophy win away at Merthyr Tydfil.
Away from football Dawkins sold boats in Torquay where he lived and had played most of his career.
He was part of the squad that travelled to Georgia in the summer of 1991. Apparently he was the first black man ever to visit the Georgian town of Achaltsiche and he was reportedly followed along the streets by curious men, women and children. They started at him intently, talked to him and tried to touch him!
It's easy to forget that he was still around for the following season but he was kept out of action by a knee injury. What followed was worse though as he refused to cancel his contract and got the club in trouble with the FA because they couldn't afford the £17k needed to pay him off.
