Ashley Thomas - Defender

Debut : Banbury United (H) - 27/10/07

Last Game :

Powerful central defender signed from Shortwood United in October 2007.

Ashley had a trial for City during the 2007 pre-season period and can claim to have played in the last ever game at Meadow Park when he faced Salisbury City days before the floods came.

He was part of the Slimbridge team that romped to the Hellenic League title in 2006/07 before they folded and after originally missing out with the Tigers he linked up with Shortwood where he was part of the team that knocked City out of the FA Cup.

He made his debut in the BGB Premier Division match at home to Banbury United on October 27th 2007 and would've been pleased with the clean sheet that he helped the Tigers to earn, especially as goalkeeper Kev Sawyer was sent off at the start of the second half!

He has shown a prowess for goalscoring too, having to date found the net three times since he joined City. The pick of the three was a powerful header in the FA Trophy at home to Hillingdon Borough.

"The Boy's a bit special"
Q & A's with Ash
Name :
Ashley Thomas

DoB :
27/02/1982

Birthplace :
Gloucester

Playing Position :
Defender / Center Half

Other teams played for :
Chalford, Shortwood United, Slimbridge, Shortwood United

Nickname :
Smash

Team(s) Supported :
Arsenal

Strengths :
Defending:Heading and Tackling. Set pieces but pretty much just heading the ball

Weaknesses :
Distribution, repeated use of my shin and a bit of a short fuse!

How do you keep yourself fit for football?
I like to get in the gym regularly and eat pretty healthy. Rest is very important too. I get a lot of stick from the lads about my protein shakes but it works for me.

I play a bit like :
Tony Adams or Sol Campbell

Heroes :
Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Tony Adams, Sylvester Stallone!

Highlight :
I had 4 good seasons with Slimbridge and we finally won the Hellenic League in the 06-07.
Signing for Gloucester City.

Lowlight :
We lost to Truro City in the 5th Round of the FA Vase. I got sent off too so it was not a good day.
Seeing Slimbridge striker Robbie Colwell break his ankle. He was on fire that season and had scored 30 odd goals by February.

Honours :
Slimbridge: Hellenic League Winners 06-07, GFA Challenge Trophy 04, 06, 07. Hellenic Floodlight Cup 04, 06. Supporters Player of the Year, Players Player 2005-2006 Managers Player 2006-2007. University of Gloucestershire: BUSA Division 1 League winners 2003-04, 2004-05

Injuries :
Fractured toes and nose!

Best player played with :
It has to be Andy Pritchett at Slimbridge. He was a fantastic all round defender, a great captain and was always at the right place at the right time.
Also Andy Hoskins, Tommy Callinan, Gary Marshall, Alton Axton.
Plus John Evans the Shortwood manager. If it was not for him i would not be the player i am today. Doug Foxwell and John Hamilton at Slimbridge were a big influence too!
Toughest opponent :
Andy Hoskins whilst he was at Shortwood. I had some good battles with him and he gave me the toughest game I have ever had physically.
Neil Grayson gave me a lesson in a friendly against Forest Green too!

Best friend at club :
Webby or ‘Webbanot’ as I like to call him.
I have to mention the Cheltenham boys too. Rosey, Ricko and Psycho. We have a good laugh travelling to the games and the old boys tell me their stories from their long careers in football!

Favourite Music :
I listen to anything from hip-hop to motown. Favourites are Tupac, Foo Fighters and Marvin Gaye.

Favourite Movies(s) :
All six Rocky films, Scarface and anything with Arnold Schwarzenegger or Denzel Washington

Favourite TV Programme :
A-Team

Tell us something about yourself that we don't know!
I am studying an English Language degree at University

Most embarrassing moment :
I absolutely murdered the song My Girl at a Karaoke night which was filmed and is now repeatedly shown to people.

Describe yourself in five words :
Loyal, Trustworthy, Honest, Friendly and Athletic

In five years you'll be ....
Driving an Aston Martin and writing 007 after my name. In truth I hope to have a successful career in Teaching, Personal Training and have an established football coaching business.
